LEGAL - MILITARY
Dr Johnston is an experienced barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He is admitted to practice in Victoria (1984), South Australia (1984), the Australian Capital Territory (1987), and as a practitioner of the High Court of Australia (1987). He practised law for 16 years, including in commercial practice with Mallesons Stephen Jaques.
During his early career, he trained at and graduated from Officer Training School as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was posted to Defence Central in Canberra where he served as a Legal Officer. Subsequently he received an Honourable Discharge and returned to private practice.
His Masters of Law thesis (First Class Honours) at the Australian National University, under the supervision of Professor Dennis Pearce, was an examination of royalty collection systems for musicians by the Australasian Performing Right Association. (APRA AMCOS)
